Medge D. Owen
President

Medge Owen, M.D. is a professor of obstetric anesthesiology at Wake Forest University and the founder of Kybele. She has long been interested in international women's health care issues. She received a Fulbright scholarship in 1997-99 to Turkey to improve childbirth conditions and neonatal resuscitation. She has lectured and taught in numberous countries and has coauthored the first textbook of obstetric anesthesia in Turkey. She is married with one daughter who frequently accompanies her during Kybele related travel.

Margaret Sedensky
Vice President

Margaret Sedensky, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at University of Washington, Seattle. She also holds a joint appointment with the Department of Genetics at CWRU. In addition to her clinical interest in obstetric anesthesiology, she conducts research into the mechanism of action of anesthetics. She has received numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health to fund her research, and has numerous publications in the field.

Sebnem Ucer
Treasurer

Mrs. Sebnem Ucer, M.B.A., is the director of operations at Joyce Foods, Inc., of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She is also an adjunct Assistant Professor at High Point University, High Point, NC. where she has taught both business communications and international business law. A native of Turkey, she has studied both in Turkey and France prior to her arrival in the US. She has extensive work experience in her native Turkey where she was director of operations at a large company.

Lisa Councilman
Secretary

Lisa Councilman, M.D. is Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Texas A & M Health Science Center College of Medicine and Co-Director of Obstetric Anesthesia at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas. She is actively involved in the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) and serves on the SOAP Membership Committee and International Outreach Committee. She has lectured extensively on topics in obstetric anesthesia, both nationally and internationally, regularly presents posters at the annual SOAP meeting, has authored a book chapter on anesthetic management of the pregnant patient with cardiovascular disease and has edited an anesthesia board review book. She has traveled extensively and is passionate about helping to improve childbirth conditions globally. 


 
 
Helen Akinc

Mrs. Helen Akinc is a consultant, writer and editor living in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  Mrs. Akinc recently retired as Assistant Dean for Student Professional Affairs at Wake Forest University and as the Kemper Scholars Coordinator.  She has published numerous articles and has recently finished a full-length guidebook for College Parents.  She also currently teaches Intercultural Competency classes for International Studies at Wake Forest University.  She has traveled extensively to Turkey where she has family.  Mrs. Akinc is married with grown children. Brittany Clyne

Brittany Clyne, M.D. is the Clinical Chief of OB Anesthesia at Carolinas Medical in Charlotte, North Carolina.  She has traveled extensively with Kybele and lectured for Kybele related international conferences.  She has also recently present abstracts and posters at the annual SOAP meeting.  Dr. Clyne has a passion about obstetric anesthesia and childbirth safety.  She is married.  Email:  bbclyne@hotmail.com


 



 
 
Cyril Engmann

Cyril Engmann, M.D., FAAP., is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at the University of N.C., Chapel Hill. With roots from Ghana and educated in England, Dr. Engmann is a neonatologist who has focused on improving neonatal mortality around the globe. Currently he is the Principal Investigator for an NIH funded study within the NICHD Global Network, and travels extensively in Central and West Africa. He has also worked in mobile medical units in remote areas of Guatemala, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. He and his wife have two young sons who keep them on their toes.

Thomas Ivester

Thomas Ivester, M.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of North Carolina School of Public Health.  Tom specializes in Maternal-Fetal medicine and his interests lie in critical care obstetrics, health care improvement and high risk pregnancy.  Tom graduated from Medical School at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC and served his residency at the Medical Center of Delaware in Wilmington, Delaware.  Tom served his fellowship at Columbia University in New York City and at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.  Tom has been very active in Kybele's Ghana program and has made multiple trips with the Kybele Team.

Francis Marshall James, III

Frank James III, M.D., is Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He has served as past President of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology, the American Board of Anesthesiology, the Association of University Anesthesiologists, the Society of Academic Anesthesiology Chairs and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research. He was also Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Wake Forest University. In addition to numerous academic awards and honors, he has an extensive publication record including textbooks, book chapters, and peer-reviewed journal articles, focusing on a key clinical interest, obstetric anesthesiology.

Virgil Manica

Virgil S. Manica, M.D. is Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Director of Obstetric Anesthesia at Tufts – New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.Dr. Manica is a native of Romania and received his medical training both in Romania and USA. He is actively involved in the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP), serving on both the International Outreach Committee and the SOAP Membership Committee. He has lectured on topics in obstetric anesthesia nationally and internationally and has traveled extensively during his career. He is passionate about obstetric anesthesia and is trying to contribute actively to improving maternal and childbirth conditions worldwide.


 
 
Holly Muir

Holly Muir, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center.  She also serves as Medical Instructor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chief of Women's Anesthesiology and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations.  Holly has been on numerous medical trips with Kybele and has published a variety of articles relating to obstetric anesthesia.  Dr. Muir received her training at Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine in Canada.  She performed her residency at the Royal College of Physicians (Anesthesia) in Canada and her Fellowship in Obstetric Anesthesia at the University of Pennsylvania Hospitals.  Email:  muir0005@mc.duke.edu



 
 
Adeyemi (Yemi) J Olufolabi

Yemi Olufolabi, M.D., F.R.C.A., is Associate Clinical Professor in the Division of Women’s Anesthesia at Duke University. Dr. Olufolabi is a native of Nigeria and received his medical training in England. He has traveled widely in his career. Dr. Olufolabi’s clinical focus is in the area of obstetric anesthesiology and airway management. One of his primary research interests in pain relief during labor. Dr. Olufolabi is passionate about improving childbirth conditions in his African homeland.

Robin Ellington Sizemore

Mrs. Robin Sizemore is the Executive Director for Hopscotch Adoptions, Inc., a NC licensed, NY authorized, Hague Accredited, non-profit international child placing agency.  She is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science in Communications/Public Relations and minor in Marketing.  Robin has assisted orphaned children in Georgia and Armenia for over 14 years by conducting numerous humanitarian aid operations.  She is now assisting children in Bulgaria and Ghana.  She has assisted over 300 orphaned children into permanent families and has improved conditions at the orphanages with which she has worked.  Robin is the very proud mother of three children; two through adoption from the Caucasus region and one biological surprise.  www.hopscotchadoptions.org

Can B. Unal

Can Bora Unal, M.D., Ph. D. is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Wake Forest University. He is President/Founder of Ion Technologies in Winston-Salem, N.C. and Iontek Ltd., Istanbul, Turkey. His Istanbul based company was recently recognized as “technology company of the year” out of more than 50 companies. He is a researcher in the area of pharmacology and molecular biology, and has numerous publications in the field. He also serves as an international business consultant.
